Xabi Alonso hails Emiliano Martinez’s “aura” after Chelsea debut against Brighton

Xabi Alonso believes Emiliano Martinez could bring far more than saves to Chelsea after praising the Argentine goalkeeper’s immediate impact and describing his presence as an “aura to influence” the entire squad.

Martinez wasted no time settling into life at Stamford Bridge.

His arrival from Aston Villa was confirmed on Sunday morning, with the World Cup-winning goalkeeper signing a three-year contract before going straight into Chelsea’s starting XI for the Premier League clash against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Less than 48 hours after arriving at the club, Martinez was handed one of the biggest tests possible: a competitive debut in a high-pressure Premier League encounter.

But the 33-year-old looked comfortable from the start.Chelsea eventually emerged with a dramatic 4-3 victory, with Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto, Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer finding the net.

While the Blues conceded three goals, Martinez still produced several impressive reaction stops and showed the experience that has made him one of the most recognisable goalkeepers in world football.

For Alonso, however, Martinez’s contribution goes beyond his work between the posts.

The Chelsea boss believes the Argentine’s personality, experience and ability to command those around him could become increasingly important as the season develops.

“Emi is a World Cup winner, is 33 years old, and is very experienced. I spoke with him yesterday (Saturday) and we talked about the game and our team. He felt ready, and I don’t have to tell him many things for him to perform,” he said.

“Even today, while a goalkeeper wants to keep a clean sheet, I am happy with his impact. He has been in the building just 48 hours, so now we will have a whole week to prepare for the next one.

“Day by day, we will feel this presence because he has this charisma, this aura to influence and have a very positive connection with the rest of the team.”

Those words offer a clear indication of why Chelsea moved for Martinez.

The Blues have not simply signed a goalkeeper with Premier League experience.

They have brought in a World Cup winner who has spent years performing under pressure, organizing defences and thriving in some of football’s biggest moments.

Martinez’s rapid inclusion in the starting XI also sends a strong message about Alonso’s confidence in him.

There was no lengthy bedding-in period. No waiting for weeks to understand the system. Martinez arrived, spoke with his manager, declared himself ready and was immediately thrown into action.

Chelsea supporters will hope his debut is only the beginning.

The 4-3 victory over Brighton may not have delivered the clean sheet Martinez would have wanted, but it offered an early glimpse of what he could bring to the team.

His saves were important, his experience was evident and his commanding presence was already being felt.

Alonso now has a full week to work with his new goalkeeper ahead of Chelsea’s next challenge.
