Balague says Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City legacy can survive charges

Pep Guardiola’s remarkable Manchester City legacy should not be automatically linked to the club’s legal troubles, according to Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.

Guardiola transformed City into one of the dominant forces in English football during his time at the Etihad, collecting 20 major trophies and establishing a period of sustained success.

With the club facing charges and an ongoing legal process, questions have inevitably been raised about how the developments could affect the reputation of those associated with City.

However, Balague believes Guardiola’s individual achievements should be considered separately from any findings concerning the club.

“If there is any evidence that Pep participated in any wrongdoing, that should be examined. But there is zero evidence of that,” Balague said.

“A finding about Manchester City for me is not a finding about Pep Guardiola.

“You can recognise what Guardiola achieved as a coach without defending Manchester City. For me, they are not contradictory positions. His work, in my eyes, is not tainted.

“If everybody else have told him in different ways nothing is wrong, you go about your business as if nothing is wrong.

“He created something that I don’t think can be forgotten.”

Guardiola’s record at Manchester City provides the backdrop to Balague’s argument.

The Spanish coach arrived at the club in 2016 and went on to oversee a period that produced domestic dominance and European success.

Under Guardiola, City developed a distinctive possession-based style while consistently competing for the biggest honours available.

The club’s trophy haul during his tenure included multiple Premier League titles, FA Cups, League Cups and the Champions League, among other major honours.

Those achievements have made Guardiola one of the defining managers of the modern Premier League era.

The distinction between the manager’s work and any potential findings against the club is central to Balague’s assessment.

His comments do not dismiss the importance of any evidence that could emerge involving individuals. Instead, he argues that responsibility should be assessed on the basis of specific evidence rather than automatically attached to Guardiola because of his position as manager.

The wider Manchester City situation remains a major story in English football, with the club’s legal proceedings continuing to attract significant attention.

For Guardiola, though, Balague believes the footballing legacy created at the Etihad should be assessed on its own terms.

The Spaniard’s influence at City extends beyond the number of trophies won. His tactical ideas, playing philosophy and impact on the club’s footballing identity have helped shape an era that will remain a major part of Manchester City’s history.

As the legal process surrounding the club continues, the debate over how its eventual outcome should affect the reputations of players, coaches and executives is likely to continue.

For Balague, one point remains clear: whatever conclusions are reached about Manchester City, Guardiola’s documented achievements as a coach should not automatically be erased or redefined.
