Wales defender Ben Davies has backed his team to respond positively after their disappointing UEFA Nations League defeat to Denmark.
The result left Wales frustrated after a closely fought contest in matchday four, with Davies admitting there was little to separate the two sides for long periods.
Despite the setback, the experienced defender believes Wales showed enough character and commitment to take into their remaining fixtures.
“I didn’t feel like there was a whole lot in the game, to be honest. It’s a tough way to concede and a disappointing loss.
“We’d have loved to have had more (points) but when you’re playing against very good teams, strong opposition and the situation we’re in where we’re missing some key players, that’s football.
“We gave it our all and I’m very proud of the group.
“You can’t fault the effort that’s in this group, so we’re going to go into the next two games with nothing to lose.”
Davies’ comments underline the frustration within the Wales camp, but there was also a clear sense of perspective after another demanding night against strong opposition.
Wales were unable to turn their effort into the result they wanted, with Denmark eventually claiming the points. For Davies, however, the performance itself showed that the Welsh squad remains willing to fight despite the challenges surrounding the team.
The absence of several important players has made Wales’ task more difficult during the current campaign. Davies acknowledged that reality, stressing that facing high-quality opposition while dealing with key absences can quickly make the margin for error even smaller.
Still, the Wales captain believes there is no reason for the players to dwell on the disappointment.
With two Nations League matches still to come, Wales have an opportunity to finish the international window strongly. Davies’ message was particularly clear: the team now has nothing to lose.
That mentality could prove important as Wales look to respond to the Denmark setback.
Rather than allowing the defeat to damage confidence, the veteran defender wants the squad to use the experience as motivation. The commitment shown by the players remains a major positive, even if the final outcome did not reflect their efforts.
Davies also praised the togetherness within the group, highlighting the attitude of players who have continued to compete despite the difficult circumstances.
For Wales, the challenge now is turning that spirit into points.
The defeat to Denmark may have left the squad disappointed, but Davies’ assessment suggests there is no shortage of belief inside the dressing room. The focus will quickly shift towards the next two games, where Wales will look to finish the campaign with a stronger response.
And with the pressure of securing results still hanging over them, Davies believes the team can approach those fixtures with freedom.
Wales may have suffered another setback, but their experienced defender insists the fight remains firmly alive.
The next two matches will provide the perfect opportunity to prove it.
