Lampard praises Gus Hamer’s attitude as Coventry return gathers pace

Frank Lampard has praised Gus Hamer’s professionalism and determination after the Coventry City midfielder took the initiative to secure more playing time while fighting for a place in the starting XI.

Hamer returned to the Sky Blues during the summer transfer window in a reported £6 million move from Sheffield United, but his second spell at the club has yet to deliver regular first-team football.

The 29-year-old has made just four appearances off the bench since his return, leaving him eager to build match sharpness and convince Lampard that he deserves a more prominent role.

Rather than allow his limited minutes to affect his attitude, Hamer asked to feature for Coventry’s Under-21s on Tuesday lunchtime, a day after coming on as a substitute in their 3-1 defeat to Tottenham.

The midfielder’s decision impressed Lampard, who revealed that the player was keen to get back on the pitch and maintain the rhythm he had become accustomed to during his career.

Speaking ahead of Coventry’s home clash against Fulham on Saturday, Lampard said: “He wanted to play. It was a personal decision and I like that,” Lampard told a press conference before Saturday’s home game against Fulham. “He wanted to play and get minutes because Gus has been used to playing minutes regularly, pretty much.

The Coventry manager acknowledged that competition within the squad has increased, making it more difficult for established players to walk straight into the starting line-up.

Hamer previously enjoyed regular football at Sheffield United, where he spent three years after leaving Coventry in 2023. His return has placed him in a competitive midfield group, meaning he must continue working to earn opportunities.

“And these days at Coventry from his days at Sheffield United we’ve got a competitive squad now and his area of the pitch is competitive.

“But Gus has been very good to work with since he’s come back to us. Myself and my staff have been really, really impressed by his approach, his training, his ethic and what he wants to do. And Gus is going to help us.”

Lampard’s comments underline the value he places on Hamer’s attitude, even as the midfielder waits for a breakthrough in the first team. The manager believes the player’s quality remains unquestioned and expects him to make a contribution as Coventry navigate the demands of the campaign.

Hamer originally made more than 120 appearances for the Sky Blues during his first three-year spell before moving to Sheffield United in 2023. The reported deal was worth up to £15 million following the Blades’ promotion to the Premier League.

His return to Coventry raised expectations among supporters familiar with his technical ability and influence in midfield. However, the immediate challenge is turning that reputation into consistent involvement under Lampard.

The manager made it clear that Hamer remains firmly in his plans, praising his willingness to stay prepared despite the limited opportunities available so far.

Lampard added: “And we all know, everyone in the building and at the CBS knows that he’s a really talented player who’s going to help us. So he’s just staying ready, and I’m very pleased with how Gus has been. He’s a good example.”

For Hamer, the message is clear: patience, hard work and the right attitude could yet earn him a regular place in Coventry’s starting line-up. His decision to seek additional minutes has already earned his manager’s approval, and the midfielder will now look to turn that positive impression into more opportunities on the pitch.
