Moyes celebrates Everton’s Newcastle double after St James’ Park win

David Moyes has described Everton’s 1-0 victory over Newcastle United as a “great result” after his side completed a remarkable double over the Magpies in the space of four days.

The Toffees returned to St James’ Park on Monday night and left with all three Premier League points, building on their 3-1 Carabao Cup victory over Newcastle in the fourth round last Thursday.

It was another impressive result for Moyes, whose team had to show patience before finding the breakthrough in a contest that offered few clear-cut opportunities during the opening 45 minutes.

Everton finally made their pressure count just four minutes after the restart. Tyrique George’s low effort squeezed underneath Lukás Hornícek, leaving the Newcastle goalkeeper unable to keep the ball out.

Thierno Barry reacted quickest to the loose ball, arriving at the right moment to stab home and give Everton the lead. The striker’s finish proved decisive, taking his Premier League goal tally for the campaign to four and securing a valuable away victory.

For Moyes, beating Newcastle twice in such a short period was a significant achievement, particularly against a side he believes are difficult to overcome.

The Everton manager was quick to acknowledge his players’ commitment, praising their determination to keep pushing despite a challenging spell.

“They are so good in what they do as they give everything they’ve got,” the Everton boss said.

“They’re a brilliant group of players and they’ve had it tough as well. They want to keep winning and they’ve found it difficult with the way things have gone, but they’re pulling it out and doing their best to be in all the games.

“It’s never easy … we beat Newcastle on Thursday night and to beat them again today is not an easy thing to do for any club and this level.

“To come here and get a good win tonight was a great result for us.”

The victory ended Everton’s three-match winless run in the Premier League and lifted them into seventh place in the standings. More importantly, it delivered their first away league win of the campaign, giving Moyes another reason to celebrate his team’s performance.

Everton had previously collected draws in difficult away fixtures, but the manager had been eager to turn those encouraging performances into victories. He was particularly pleased with the defensive discipline that accompanied Barry’s match-winning contribution.

The Toffees kept a clean sheet at one of the league’s difficult grounds, ensuring Newcastle could not find a response after falling behind.

Moyes also pointed to Everton’s impressive away form from last season as something he wanted his players to rediscover.

“We’ve actually done quite well in some of the games getting draws in difficult away games, but we’ve not picked up a victory and last season we had a great run of results away from home.

“So I was hoping to pick it up tonight and thankfully we did, clean sheet and got the goal that counted.”

With back-to-back victories over Newcastle now secured, Everton have gained valuable momentum at a crucial stage of their Premier League campaign. Moyes will hope the performance at St James’ Park marks the beginning of a stronger run, rather than an isolated result.
