“A huge step back”- Ruud Van Nistelrooy bemoans Leicester City’s lacklustre outing

Leicester City manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy has expressed disappointment over his side’s showing, after they suffered an embarrassing 4-0 home loss to Brentford on Friday night.

The Foxes came into the game needing a win to ease their relegation worries, but were thrashed in front of their home fans by the Bees, making it eleven defeats in their past thirteen matches in all competitions and a third straight loss in the English Premier League.

“We have to acknowledge that it’s a huge step back. There was hope after certain performances. The beginning of the game was hopeful with three chances, Jamie [Vardy] had two and [Woyo] Coulibaly had a shot from close range, where we have to go [one] up. That could have changed the game”, he said.

After a bright start under the former Manchester United interim manager, the Foxes are now in danger of returning back to the English second division as they occupy the 19th position, two points behind Wolves in 17th-place.

“Overall, the difference between the level of Brentford and us today was big. The first 10, 15 minutes, after that they showed they were big steps ahead of us at the moment.

We were nowhere near their levels today. We have to acknowledge it. The level between Brentford and us was significant today – and a worry for future hopes”, the former Dutch international continued.

“Also we know we gave the other teams above us and below us the chance to gain points and momentum. Then it can become difficult really quickly if we don’t keep picking up points.”
