Atletico Madrid CEO reveals stance on potential summer swoop for Liverpool forward

Atletico Madrid chief executive officer Miguel Angel Gil Marin has revealed the club’s stance on potentially facilitating a move for out-of-favour Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez in the summer.

Nunez has endured a rollercoaster time at Liverpool since joining the Anfield giants from Liga Portugal heavyweights Benfica back in 2022. The Uruguayan’s form has been somewhat erratic in Liverpool colours with his persistent profligacy in front of goal, the most frustrating part of his game.

Nunez’s struggles with finishing have frustrated both fans and Arne Slot, leading to his diminished role in Liverpool’s starting lineup. Since Slot’s arrival last summer, the Uruguay international has started just seven of his 22 Premier League appearances, registering 4 goals and 2 assists.

The 25-year-old striker has come under heavy criticism from fans, the media and even his own manager, following a couple of high-profile missed chances in big games. According to reports by Football Espana, the situation has reached a decisive stage, with Liverpool prepared to let Nunez leave in the summer.

The Reds believe it’s best to move on due to his inconsistent form, however, it remains uncertain how much they could demand for his transfer, considering their €85 million investment in 2022 and the three years left on his contract.

Amid persistent rumours linking Atleti as potential suitors for the Uruguayan, Los Colchoneros’ CEO has poured cold water on the claims.

“A move for Darwin Nunez? We are not looking for a striker; our team needs reinforcements in other positions, which is what the Atletico Madrid management is currently discussing,” he said as per reports from 365 Scores Arabic.

“Nunez is not part of the club’s transfer plans for the upcoming period and the reports about our interest in the player are completely baseless.”
