Super Eagles skipper William Troost-Ekong has opened up on Nigeria’s plan to defeat Rwanda ahead of their meeting in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Friday.
Nigeria’s qualification campaign has not gone according to plan with the West African giants languishing in 5th place on group C’s standing. A poor start has seen them record three frustrating draws and one disappointing defeat.
Under the tutelage of new head coach Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles are looking to get their qualifying campaign back on track, and they will be looking to start with a win over group C leaders Rwanda.
Speaking ahead of the game billed to go down at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, Ekong opened up on how Nigeria intend to inflict a first defeat of the qualifying campaign on the Amavubi.
“We try to break it down into things that we can actually achieve, our objectives,” he explained.
“We are trying to prepare for the game, be very objective in how we are trying to approach it and what we need to do to focus on Rwanda.”
“Of course, we have to respect them for their position on the table, and I think we understand what they want to do.
“They have a new coach as well, so it’s going to be a very loaded match, but we’re just trying to break it down and focus on the things we can control.”
While the Super Eagles certainly possess the arsenal to triumph over their East African counterparts, the Amavubi could yet prove to be a stubborn opponent come Friday.
Nigeria have failed to secure victory in their last two meetings with Rwanda securing a shock 2-1 win in their most recent encounter at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo back in November.
