Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has opened up about the major reasons behind his decision to commit his future to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr after a brief period of uncertainty surrounding his next career step.
Ronaldo was at the center of transfer rumours just before the commencement of the ongoing Club World Cup with his anticipated participation coupled with a social media post suggesting at the time that his Al Nassr career was “over.”
However, despite receiving multiple offers that would have enabled play at the ongoing tournament in the United States, the 41-year-old chose to extend his stay with the Riyadh-based club by signing a new two-year deal.
“I had some offers to play in the [Club] World Cup but I think it didn’t make sense because I prefer to have a good rest, a good preparation, because this season will be very long as it is the World Cup season at the end of the year,” Ronaldo explained on Al Nassr’s in-house media channel.
“I want to be ready not only for Al Nassr but also for the national team. So, this is why I decided to play the last game for the Nations League and not listen to anything.
“And of course, to be in this club, which I love. I want to stay [in Saudi], because I believe in the project. Not just the next two years but until 2034, which is when the World Cup will be held in Saudi Arabia. I believe that will be the most beautiful World Cup ever.”
Ronaldo’s new contract will see him bag £178 million in annual wages alongside other mouth-watering bonuses and perks for himself and his family.
