Chelsea earned their spot in the Club World Cup semi-finals with a spectacular 2-1 triumph over Palmeiras.
Malo Gusto’s cross first deflected off Agustin Giay, then Palmeiras goalie Weverton, then bounced into the goal in the 83rd minute as extra-time approached.
After a stressful second half, the lucky finish gave Chelsea the victory in Philadelphia.
With a poised finish, Cole Palmer had early on fired the Blues ahead. Estevao Willian, an 18-year-old poised to join the Stamford Bridge heavyweights after the competition, thundered an equalising goal for Palmeiras.
As the game progressed, the Brazilian side seemed tougher and threatened to steal a late victory. Enzo Maresca’s team, meanwhile, hung on and struck at precisely the ideal time.
Although luck helped to determine the result, Gusto’s delivery was clearly decisive.
In the semifinals on Tuesday at 8 p.m. UK time, the London club will next meet Fluminense.
But they will lack Liam Delap and Levi Colwill, who are suspended following bookings received during the game.
