Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has described Chelsea as a perfect example of the kind of footballing identity his side aspires to build.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the Black Cats’ boss praised the Blues for their quality, balance, and youthful energy, admitting that facing them is both a challenge and a learning opportunity.
“Chelsea are a really strong side. A top-four team in the Premier League. Clearly, they can play 60 games per season,” Le Bris said.
The Sunderland coach highlighted Chelsea’s impressive squad depth and their focus on nurturing young talent, which is a model he wants his own team to emulate as they continue their development.
He added: “They have depth and a young and dynamic squad, which is a good example for us because we aim to become not this kind of team exactly, but with the same identity, the same strategy about development.”
Le Bris also pointed out the Stamford Bridge giants’ versatility and tactical strength, recognizing their ability to dominate possession, strike on the counter, and capitalize on set-pieces.
“They are good in possession, excellent in counter-attacks, impressive on set-pieces, well-coached and, above all, they have individuals who can change the course of the game.”
The gaffer believes the upcoming match will be a valuable test for his players as it will be a chance to measure their progress against one of England’s elite sides.
“It’s a big test and a strong opportunity to develop our identity. If we can win something, then we’ll do it.”
As Sunderland continue to refine their playing style under the French tactician, the coach’s admiration for the Blues’ structure and success reflects his ambition to build a competitive, progressive team capable of standing toe-to-toe with the best.
