Luis Diaz: Liverpool’s boss explains hat-trick hero’s role in Bayern Leverkusen win

Following the reds impressive 4-0 victory over German Champions Bayer Leverkusen, Liverpool’s head coach Arne Slot has explained his decision to play Luis Diaz through the middle in yesterday’s champions league game. It was a bold decision to start the Colombian forward as the target man in such an important game.

Speaking in the post match conference, Slot said, “A few things why. We have only four attackers at the moment with the injuries to Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa”. Slot also explained the reason for starting Diaz ahead of Darwin Nunez.

“He didn’t play that much in the beginning and then he started to play more. With this fixture list, it’s impossible to play them all especially if you haven’t played many games”.

Arne Slot also said there were tactical reasons behind the tweak made. ”I think Jonathan Tah who is a really good defender and maybe the best defender in Germany likes to play more against a target man, he continued.

“We chose to play Lucho there to surprise him with the runs in behind and if you look at the first goal, that played out.”

Slot also praised his teams’s intensity and flexibility in the big win over Leverkusen. A brilliant hatrick from Luis Diaz alongside a goal from forward Cody Gakpo gave the reds an all important victory over their German counterparts.

Two quickfire goals by Diaz and Gakpo set Liverpool on the way to victory before the Colombian completed his hatrick in added time.
