Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas has acknowledged the internal punishments Viktor Gyokeres received after the forward missed Saturday’s planned pre-season training.
Though the club had already given the 27-year-old extra time off, he didn’t show.
Arsenal are still in negotiations for the Swedish player, but they have not met Sporting’s price. While Arsenal’s most recent offer falls short, the Lisbon side want £60.4 million upfront plus £8.6 million in add-ons.
“We’re calm. Everything can be solved with the closure of the market, a hefty fine and an apology to the group,” Varandas told Portuguese media.
“If the geniuses devising this strategy think that this puts pressure on me to make it easier for him to leave, they are completely wrong. No one is above the club’s interests,” he added.
Verde e brancos hold the Swede under contract till 2028 and assert they are ready to retain him for the next three years unless their asking price is matched.
