Head coach of the German national team Julian Nagelsmann has pointed fingers at Liverpool over the slow adaptation of Florian Wirtz to life in the Premier League.
Wirtz arrived at Liverpool as one of the most expensive signings ever in the Premier League but the former Bayer Leverkusen star has failed to produce the goods at Anfield as Arne Slot’s side continue to struggle.
The Germany international is yet to register a single goal contribution in the English top flight so far, however, Nagelsmann believes Wirtz’s lack of end product isn’t entirely his fault.
“Maybe Liverpool could also help him out by scoring some of the chances he creates,” Nagelsmann said. “That would be one idea because he does create a few chances. It is just that they somehow do not like to shoot the ball in from those chances. That is part of the truth.”
Nagelsmann also alluded to Liverpool’s current state of affairs, insisting that the situation of things at the Merseyside club simply makes it difficult for Wirtz to make a massive impact.
“The overall situation does not make it easy for Flo either,” he sighed.
“The whole club is not as stable this year as it was last year. It is much harder to slip into the team now. If you look at the game against [Manchester] City they were actually the worst team over the 90 minutes. So it is also difficult for Flo to make any real big impact.
“Ultimately, the overall situation is such that he just needs a little more time, which is normal and you see that with other players who move to the English Premier League as well.
“We all know what he is capable of and it is perfectly normal for a player of his age to go through a bit of a dip in form. We cannot expect him to perform at the same level for three years straight.
“Instead we all need to support him a little bit so that he can clear his head here.”
