Benji Casey stepped onto the senior stage for the first time and called it a dream come true.
The 17-year-old made his Crystal Palace debut in the 3-0 win over Shelbourne in Dublin, capping a rapid rise through the academy.
His cameo came late in the UEFA Conference League victory, yet the moment meant everything.
Casey admitted he didn’t expect to be called, but he stayed ready.
“It was a great day,” he said. “It was something that I’ve been dreaming about my whole life. I didn’t even think I was going to come on, but I was always ready.”
He embraced the moment with confidence. The nerves stayed away as he received strong support from his teammates.
Casey and fellow youngster Joel Drakes-Thomas experienced their first full taste of first-team life together.
“We haven’t been with the first team before, me and Joel. But the whole experience was just enjoyment.”
The teenager also praised manager Oliver Glasner for his simplicity and belief.
“Glasner’s a great manager. He just told me to have a go and do my thing,” he added.
Casey now hopes this won’t be the last time he features for the senior side.He wants to build on the debut and push for more minutes.
“I just need to keep doing well and hopefully get another opportunity with the first-team, hopefully get some more minutes. But I enjoyed it.”
Gratitude defined his reflection. Even a short appearance felt huge for a player his age.
“Whether it’s five minutes or two minutes if I’m coming on, not a lot of kids have that, so I’m grateful for that experience.”
Casey has already begun learning from Crystal Palace’s senior pros.
He highlighted Eddie Nketiah’s finishing and praised Uche’s sharp performance.
“They are all great players to work with and look at. It was great.”
With such a memorable debut, Casey’s journey into top-flight football now feels truly underway.
