Chelsea talisman Cole Palmer played down any talk of the World Cup after marking his return from injury with a goal in the Blues’ 2-0 Premier League win over Everton on Saturday.
The England international opened the scoring at Stamford Bridge before Malo Gusto sealed the points, ending Chelsea’s four-game winless run.
It was Palmer’s fifth league goal against Everton, his joint-most against any opponent, but the midfielder insisted his attention remains firmly on regaining full fitness.
The strike was a welcome way to announce his return, following a recent spell on the sidelines with a groin problem. England head coach Thomas Tuchel was in attendance, yet Palmer stressed he is not looking beyond his recovery.
“I’ve not been looking too far ahead to be honest. I’ve been injured for three months, I just need to get back to full fitness,” Palmer told BBC Match of the Day.
“I know what I can offer when I’m fully fit, so hopefully I get there soon.
“I wouldn’t say I’m at my best yet. I’m still dealing with an injury. Hopefully, it gets better and better, but there’s still a bit to go.
“It is getting better. The stuff I’ve been doing with the physios at the club. It’s just a matter of not doing too much too soon.
“Literally, it’s just a day by day thing. Hopefully it gets better.”
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca will be hoping Palmer can avoid a setback and regain full fitness in good time as the Blues glaringly struggled to get results in his absence.
The West Londoners are in EFL Cup action next, with a trip to the Cardiff City Stadium. A win will take them through to the semi-finals and edge them closer to silverware for the 2025/2026 campaign.
