Man United’s Fernandes reveals hurtful exit talks and reason for staying

Bruno Fernandes has opened up on a difficult chapter in his Manchester United journey.

The captain revealed that the club were open to his departure last summer. And the memory still lingers.

Fernandes made it clear the situation cut deep. Not because of football alone. But because of loyalty.

“Man United wanted me to leave last summer, I have that in my head,” he told Canal11.

The Portugal international explained that discussions took place at board level.

“I told the directors this, but I think they didn’t have the courage to make that decision,” he added.

Despite the uncertainty, the Portugal international stayed put. Family played a role.

So did his bond with the club. And crucially, belief from the manager.

“I decided to stay, also because of family reasons, but because I genuinely like the club. The conversation with the manager also made me stay. But, from the club’s side, I felt a bit like, if you leave, it’s not so bad for us.”

That feeling left scars especially for a player who has carried United through difficult seasons.

“It hurts me a lot. More than hurting, it makes me sad because I’m a player, they have nothing to criticise about. I’m always available, I always play, good or bad. I give my all.

“Then you see things around you, players who don’t value the club as much and don’t defend the club as much… that makes you sad.”

Since arriving from Sporting CP in 2020, Fernandes has been one of United’s most influential figures.

He captained the side, delivered decisive moments in Europe and domestically, and consistently ranked among the Premier League’s top creators.

Even amid United’s recent struggles, his commitment has rarely dipped.

He plays through pain. He fronts responsibility. He speaks when others hide.

For now, Fernandes remains at Old Trafford. But his words underline a fragile relationship that may yet define United’s next big decision.
