Allegri calls for calm after AC Milan’s Supercoppa defeat to Napoli

AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri has urged calm among supporters of the club, stressing that the Rossoneri must not lose sight of their main objective despite their Supercoppa Italiana setback to Napoli.

Milan’s Supercoppa campaign ended at the semi-final stage on Thursday following a 2-0 defeat to Antonio Conte’s side at Al-Awwal Park.

David Neres broke the deadlock six minutes before the interval, before Rasmus Højlund sealed the result with a well-taken finish shortly after the hour mark.

The loss continued a worrying trend for Allegri’s men, who have now conceded first in each of their last four competitive matches, having fallen behind only twice in their opening 15 games of the season across all competitions.

Nevertheless, Allegri downplayed the defeat and called for patience, reiterating that Milan’s priority remains securing a top-four finish in Serie A.

“One match can’t overturn three months of work,” Allegri told reporters in his post-match press conference.

“We need to analyse things with serenity. Only calm can help us achieve our objective, which is finishing in the top four.”

Reflecting on the game, the experienced Italian tactician admitted that there were a lot of lapses in his side’s performance and Napoli deserved their victory.

“We faced a strong Napoli, and we knew that,” the Milan boss added. “We could have done better on the two goals.

“It was a well-played match by both teams, but they defended better and deserved to win.

“We had favourable moments and managed the ball quite well. We needed to attack the box better. If you make mistakes like we did for the first goal, you must defend better.

“When you concede two goals in three consecutive matches that could have been avoided, you have to understand how to do better.”
