AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori has not abandoned his ambition of forcing his way back into the England picture, with the 28-year-old still targeting a place in the Three Lions’ squad for the 2026 World Cup despite intense competition for selection.
Tomori made his senior England debut in 2019 and went on to earn five caps under Gareth Southgate, but his international involvement has stalled in recent years, having been overlooked for more than two years.
That absence has come despite Tomori maintaining a prominent role at club level, where he has continued to establish himself as a key figure in Milan’s back line. This season, Tomori has started 13 of Milan’s 15 Serie A matches, underlining his importance to the Rossoneri.
Eligible to represent Canada, whom he featured for at Under-19 level, Tomori has remained committed to England, even as the path back into the national team appears crowded under Thomas Tuchel.
Still, there is encouragement for the defender, with the recent recall of Milan team-mate Ruben Loftus-Cheek serving as a reminder that strong performances in Serie A are not going unnoticed.
“I spoke to him after the last international break in November. We’ve spoken a few times and the message is to keep doing what I’m doing,” Tomori told BBC Sport.
“The World Cup is six months away and there’s a lot of football left to play.
“I know he’s watching and keeping an eye because he called up Ruben. That gives me the confidence I can make it.
“He came to Milan last season and I know he gets our data and sees our clips regularly, too.
“The way he spoke about it is that it’s difficult because there’s so many players in that position, and I get it because you have players like John Stones, Marc Guehi, Dan Burn and Ezri Konsa.
“But the World Cup is still a dream and I’m working towards that.”
