Flick singles out Barcelona star for praise after comfortable Villarreal win

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick had huge words of praise for goalkeeper Joan Garcia following the Spaniard’s impressive performance in the Blaugrana’s comfortable 2-0 La Liga victory over Villarreal on Sunday.

The win saw Barcelona re-establish a four-point cushion at the summit of the table, with Raphinha and Lamine Yamal on target against a Villarreal side reduced to 10 men.

While the goals ensured the points, Flick was quick to reference the work done at the opposite end of the pitch. The German gaffer insisted the clean sheet owed plenty to Garcia, who produced a series of vital interventions to keep the hosts at bay.

Garcia finished the contest with five saves and a crucial clearance, prompting Flick to laud the Spain international for saving Barcelona during key moments of the game

“He saved us on many occasions,” Flick said of Garcia. “I’m also very happy he kept a clean sheet again.

“He is an important player for us. But we are a team. We all defend with and without the ball. We were a bit tired, and we missed some passes.”I’m happy that Joan is in my team, but it’s not my job whether or not he goes to the national team.”

Barcelona have been ruthless in attack throughout 2025, scoring 169 goals in 60 matches across all competitions and finding the net in each of their last 38 league games to leave Flick delighted as they close out the year on a high.

“I think we’ve overcome a lot of things this year,” he added.

“The most important thing is how the team trains. Everyone gives 100%. You can see in training how we are. We need to rest and live Christmas as a family.

“The key has been the defence; we have worked on it and also the return of quality.”
