Gabon rocked as government suspends national team after AFCON disaster

Gabon’s AFCON journey has ended off the pitch almost as dramatically as it collapsed on it after crashing out of the Africa Cup of Nations without a single win.

The government has stepped in like a referee blowing a decisive whistle to suspend the national team until further notice and dissolve the entire coaching setup.

Former Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and team skipper Bruno Ecuele Manga have also been hit hard, receiving bans from future selection as part of a sweeping response announced on January 1.

For a nation passionate about football, this verdict lands like a red card in stoppage time.

A statement, shared across social media and broadcast on national TV, laid bare the frustration and disappointment surrounding the Panthers’ tournament showing.

“Given the disgraceful performance of the Panthers during the Africa Cup of Nations Total Energies Morocco 2025, and considering the multifaceted effects that are at odds with the values of ethics and exemplary behavior promoted by the Republic, the government has decided: Dissolution of the technical staff; Suspension of the National Team until further notice; Exclusion of players Bruno Ecuele Manga and Pierre Emerick Aubameyank.

“Furthermore, the Government urges the Gabonese Football Federation to take full responsibility.”

On the pitch, the story was just as tough. Gabon finished bottom of Group F, losing all three matches.

They were beaten by Cameroon and Mozambique, and despite leading 2-0 against Ivory Coast, they were eventually overrun 3-2: a collapse that summed up their tournament.

Ecuele Manga started the first two games but was dropped against Ivory Coast, while Aubameyang managed to get on the scoresheet in the defeat to Mozambique before being left out of the final fixture.

Even beyond AFCON, the turbulence continues despite winning eight of their last ten competitive games, Gabon still failed to qualify for the World Cup, finishing just behind Ivory Coast and later falling to Nigeria in the play-off semi-final.

Now, as the dust settles, the nation finds itself at a crossroads. The reset button has been slammed, the squad is in limbo, and key figures are sidelined.

Moving forward will require rebuilding trust, re-establishing standards, and ultimately finding a way to get Gabon back competing with confidence.
