Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has insisted he will not take Sunderland lightly as they continue their title charge with a New Year’s Day clash at the Stadium of Light.
The Spaniard prepares his side for a crucial clash later today, as they hope to reduce Arsenal’s five point gap at the top, following the Gunners’ win over Aston Villa last Tuesday.
The Cityzens have won eight matches in all competitions since losing two consecutive matches in late November and also defeated the Black Cats 3-0 in the reverse fixture last December.
However, Sunderland are unbeaten at home this season, recording five wins and four draws from nine matches player at the Stadium of Light.
“We faced them a few weeks ago. They have had an incredible season.
“After being promoted you can continue with the same group or do what they have done – 14 new players – and it is not easy to adapt and Regis (Le Bris) has done it really well”, Guardiola stated ahead of Thursday’s clash.
“Tomorrow is the last game of the first leg, without playing against Chelsea. Being in that position speaks for itself.”
Man City will be boosted by the return of 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri and winger Jeremy Doku for the clash, increasing their chances of sealing maximum points.
The Cityzens have also been heavily linked with a move for Ghana and Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo this month, although Guardiola refused to comment on the transfer.
“They are tough, I remember the first season I went there [the Stadium of Light], the crowd was unbelievable”, the Spaniard continued.
“They beat Newcastle and Aston Villa, Arsenal couldn’t win there.”
Man City face Sunderland later today, before facing Chelsea in their second game of the year on Sunday.
