FA Cup holders Crystal Palace dumped out after shock defeat to Macclesfield

Non-League side Macclesfield produced one of the biggest shocks in FA Cup history after they dumped holders Crystal Palace out of the competition.

The National League club sealed a remarkable 2-1 win in their third round encounter on Saturday to advance to the fourth round of the competition.

Crystal Palace had defeated Manchester City 1-0 in the final of last season’s competition in May to win a first trophy, but have now been dumped out at the first stage of this edition.

The Premier League side started brightly, but rarely troubled Max Dearnley in the Macclesfield goal, before the home side stepped up pressure and grabbed the lead.

Captain Paul Dawson headed them in front few minutes after he got a bandage on his head after a clash of heads, as they took a shock advantage into the break.

Despite making several changes at halftime, Crystal Palace failed to get a stronghold on the game as the hosts had the better chances.

Isaac Buckley-Ricketts doubled the advantage on the half hour mark to send the home side into wonderland.

The Eagles started to pile up pressure to avoid a shock and Nigerian international Christantus Uche had a goal disallowed for offside in the buildup.

Adam Wharton also shot over, before Yeremy Pino scored in the 90th minute from a free kick on the edge of the box to set up a tense finish.

The home side held on for a famous win and one of the biggest shocks in the history of the FA Cup tournament.

Macclesfield became the first non-league team to eliminate the FA Cup holders since Crystal Palace knocked out Wolves in the 1908-09 first round.

The National League side will now find out their fourth round opponents in the draw which is scheduled to take place on Monday.
