Rosenior to make late call on Chelsea trio ahead of Arsenal showdown

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has confirmed that a final decision on the availability of Malo Gusto, Reece James and Cole Palmer for Wednesday’s League Cup semi-final first leg against Arsenal will be taken after the team’s final training session.

Fresh from a convincing FA Cup third-round victory over Charlton Athletic at The Valley, the Blues now switch focus back to domestic cup action, with Arsenal visiting Stamford Bridge in what promises to be a high-stakes opening leg.

Notably, the fixture will mark Rosenior’s first appearance in the home dugout, adding extra significance to the night as Chelsea aim to gain early control of the two-legged tie.

However, the Blues will be forced to reshuffle slightly, as Moises Caicedo is ruled out through suspension. The Ecuadorian midfielder will serve a one-match ban, leaving Rosenior to consider his midfield options carefully.

Meanwhile, the availability of Gusto, James and Palmer remains the key talking point heading into the clash.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference at Cobham, Rosenior explained that patience would be exercised before making any final calls.

“Obviously, Moi is suspended – and he was marvellous in the last game – but we’ve had no injury problems coming out from Charlton, which is a really, really good thing,” he said.

“I’ll make a decision on Cole, Reece and Malo tomorrow; I’m giving them some extra time. I appreciate that doing the press conference two days before is not ideal – sorry about that – but I’ve got time to make a decision [as to whether they are available].”

All three players were absent from the FA Cup squad at the weekend, a move Rosenior previously described as precautionary.

Importantly, the Chelsea boss moved quickly to ease any concerns, stressing that the trio are being carefully managed rather than rushed back into action.

“They’re being managed and it was a good time for them to rest in the FA Cup game. I believe in this group, and there is no reason to take risks on players’ health if you believe that we can win the game.

“It means they can come through and get extra training sessions and extra bits of work, and that’s the way it’s worked out so far.”

As the countdown continues to Wednesday night under the Stamford Bridge lights, Rosenior’s measured approach underlines a balance between ambition and caution.

With a place in the League Cup final at stake, the London heavyweights will be hoping that fitness decisions fall their way as momentum builds in the early days of the new era.
