Jeremie Frimpong marked a memorable Anfield night as Liverpool powered into the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup with a commanding 4-1 victory over Barnsley on Monday evening.
From the first whistle, the Reds set the tempo, and the breakthrough arrived in spectacular fashion when Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring with a moment of quality that lifted the home crowd.
Momentum stayed firmly with Liverpool, and Frimpong soon added another milestone, finding the net for his first goal at Anfield to put daylight between the sides.
Although Barnsley briefly swung the momentum their way, capitalising on a rare error from Szoboszlai to allow former Liverpool Academy graduate Adam Phillips to score, the Premier League side quickly regained control.
As the contest entered its closing stages, substitutes Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike turned the screw, striking late to seal a comfortable passage into the next round and set up a meeting with Brighton & Hove Albion.
“I think it was a good performance,” Frimpong said. “We went out there and gave it our all and won 4-1. I’m proud of the team.
“I feel like I got a bit of stick back home against Arsenal because instead of passing it to Flo I should’ve shot. I just thought this time I’m going to smash it! I just wanted to shoot and I took the chance.”
Scoring at Anfield, especially after a challenging spell disrupted by injury, made the moment even sweeter for the Dutch full-back.
“Exactly. It’s my first goal at home. It meant a lot to me because obviously I’ve been injured for most of the time in Liverpool. To score this goal was really like a relief.
“I just want to help the team and I want to use my ability. I’m just happy to be on the pitch and playing football. I’m happy.”
He also reserved praise for Szoboszlai, whose influence continues to drive Liverpool’s performances this season despite the isolated mistake.
“Dom’s an amazing player. The first time I played against him was when he was at RB Leipzig. I could tell he was a great player and he was going to go to a big club. It’s no surprise he’s at Liverpool.
“He’s a big impact for us. He’s everywhere on the pitch and he can play any position. It’s his work-rate and his attacking and defending ability. We’re just pleased to have him.”
With Liverpool safely through and silverware firmly in sight, Frimpong made no secret of his ambitions as the FA Cup journey gathers pace.
“Everywhere I’ve been I’ve won everything and that’s what I want to do here. That’s why I play football. I want to win trophies.”
For the Reds, the night blended progress with confidence, while for Frimpong, it was an Anfield memory that may well prove a springboard for more decisive moments ahead.
