Jack Grealish is expected to miss the remainder of the season and might need surgery on a foot fracture according to Everton manager David Moyes.
The England international has been in good form since joining the Toffees on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City last summer, scoring twice and providing six assists from 22 appearances.
The 30-year-old had joined the Cityzens in a £100 million deal in 2021, but left on loan last summer after seeing his playing minutes reduced over the last season.
Grealish suffered a fracture to his foot during Everton’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa on January 18, although he completed the entire 90 minutes in that encounter.
Speaking before the Toffees clash against Brighton on Saturday, Moyes confirmed the extent of Grealish’s injury.
“We believe he’s probably going to need surgery, but that’s still not absolutely confirmed”, the 62-year-old stated.
“It probably rules him out for the rest of the season, yes. It’s really disappointing for the player, and for the club and all of us. He’s such an important part, a big character, big experience for us.”
The injury has potentially ruled him out of the FIFA World Cup later this year, as he had hoped to play himself into contention for a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
The 30-year-old has been overlooked since the arrival of the former Chelsea boss at the dugout of the Three Lions, but will now be absent from football’s biggest competition in the summer.
“We will miss him, he’s done a lot of good things for us”, Moyes added.
Everton visit the American Express Stadium on Saturday, eyeing another favourable result to continue their rise up the standings.
The Toffees are currently in 10th position with 33 points and a win could see them move into the top seven, depending on results elsewhere.
