Eddie Howe is edging closer to welcoming Bruno Guimaraes back into the Newcastle United fold as the Magpies prepare for Saturday night’s Premier League showdown against Brentford.
The Brazilian midfielder has been sidelined since picking up an ankle injury during January’s 3-0 Champions League victory over PSV Eindhoven, missing the last four outings.
However, momentum appears to be building behind the scenes, with Howe encouraged by Guimaraes’ recent progress on the training ground.
“Getting closer,” Howe said in his pre-match press conference.
“[He] did a training session on Wednesday and felt pretty good. I will see him today and fingers crossed he will be fit.”
While Guimaraes could provide a timely lift, Newcastle may have to navigate the contest without Anthony Gordon.
The winger was forced off in midweek during the 3-1 defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg, and his availability remains in doubt.
“No major update as there’s every chance he’ll miss this game coming up at the weekend, but we hope it’s not a serious injury and he’ll be back soon.”
Meanwhile, attention also turns to Lewis Miley, who sat out the City clash with a minor knee issue.
The midfielder will be assessed late as Howe waits for clarity ahead of the weekend.
“We’ll find out today [Friday],” Howe said on Miley.
“I’m waiting on an update, it’s not a serious injury and we hope he’ll be back pretty soon.”
Elsewhere, Newcastle’s injury list remains unchanged, with Joelinton, Emil Krafth, Tino Livramento and Fabian Schar all still sidelined as Howe balances selection decisions ahead of a demanding test under the lights.
