Granit Xhaka will not be part of the matchday storyline when Sunderland make the trip to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, with the midfielder ruled out of an emotional reunion against his former club.
The Sunderland captain enjoyed a lengthy and influential spell at Arsenal, making 297 appearances for the Gunners between 2016 and 2023.
However, this return to familiar territory has been halted by an ankle injury, forcing Xhaka to watch from afar as his side prepare for the challenge.
Despite the setback, Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris stressed that the Swiss international remains a strong presence within the squad as he works his way back to fitness.
“There is no major update at the minute but his presence around the team is still really strong,” the gaffer said.
“We look forward to having the best version of him back soon.”
Meanwhile, momentum could swing in a different direction for the Black Cats with the possible involvement of deadline-day signing Nilson Angulo.
The winger, who completed a move from Anderlecht, is edging closer to making his first appearance.
“He will arrive in the country later on Thursday. He’s played a lot, so he’s fit,” Le Bris said.
“Now it’s a case of connecting with the team and the squad. He could be available for Saturday.”
So while Xhaka’s Arsenal reunion will have to wait, Sunderland may yet unveil a new chapter as they head into the weekend looking to make their mark.
