Tottenham’s Frank confident of stay despite defeat to Newcastle

Thomas Frank is confident of remaining as Tottenham Hotspur coach despite calls for him to be sacked by fans during Tuesday’s 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle United.

The former Brentford coach had come under intense pressure for Spurs’ poor performances in the league and needed a win over the Magpies to ease tensions.

However, they failed to win once again, with their poor record extending to just one win in their last 11 matches in the Premier League.

Speaking after the defeat, the 52-year-old remained defiant about the chances of remaining at his role at the club.

“Yeah, I’m convinced I will be”, Frank stated.

“I understand the question, it is easy to point on me but it is never only the head coach, or the ownership, or the directors, or the players, or the staff, it is everyone.

“If we do something right, we can build something that can last. Of course we are not in a top position now. Everyone knows — directors, ownership, myself — what position we are in and what we need to do better. And that’s what we are working very hard on.”

Newcastle sealed a hard-earned 2-1 over Tottenham Hotspur to end their own poor run of form.

Joe Willock’s goal was ruled out for offside in the first half, but Malick Thiaw opened the scoring in stoppage-time to give the Magpies a 1-0 advantage.

Tottenham briefly levelled through Archie Gray, but Jacob Ramsey scored minutes later to put Newcastle back in the lead and seal a 2-1 win.

“[I’m] 1000% sure [I’m the right man to lead Tottenham], I’m also 1000% sure that I never expected us to be in a situation like this with 11, 12 injuries on the back end of this and what we have been facing”, Frank added.

“I know when you need to build something and you need to get through things, you need to show unbelievable strong resilience.

“I think is fair to say there sat a few before me up here, not only for Tottenham but for many other clubs, have lost their heads many times, I think you need to have a calm head, carry on, keep fighting, keep doing the right thing, make sure we stick together because you can only get through this together. And that’s the board, that’s the leaders, the players, the staff, that’s me, that’s the fans. We can only get through this together”, the Spurs boss concluded.

Tottenham will not be in action until the 22nd of February when they face Arsenal in the North London derby, although Frank’s chances of remaining as manager until then looks very bleak.
