Simeone hails ‘incredible’ Alvarez as Atletico Madrid thrash Barcelona

Diego Simeone has expressed satisfaction with the display of Julian Alvarez and Atletico Madrid’s attackers, following their 4-0 rout of Barcelona in Thursday’s Copa del Rey semifinal first leg clash.

The Argentine forward had not scored an open play goal in over two months, but was very instrumental to his side’s demolition of their rivals on Thursday night.

The former Manchester City forward struck once and assisted another as the Rojiblancos took a massive first leg advantage into the second leg on March 3.

“The facts speak for themselves with [Álvarez]”, Simeone stated after the match.

“The assist for Lookman was fantastic. [Álvarez’s] work rate in the first half was incredible.

“Scoring goals is something he has, and thank god he’s back. He needed that goal so much, and for sure it will help clear him up for what’s next.”

Joan Garcia allowed a backpass from Eric Garcia to slip under his foot as Atletico took an early lead in the clash.

Antoine Griezmann then doubled the advantage after he was played through by Argentine defender Nahuel Molina.

Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman, who joined the club during the winter transfer window for €40 million from Atalanta then joined in on the act with a third after a pass from Alvarez.

It was Lookman’s second goal in three games for the club and his first at their home stadium as he continued his impressive start to life.

The Nigerian forward then assisted Alvarez for the fourth goal as Atletico Madrid sealed a 4-0 win over Barcelona, who had a goal ruled out for offside in the second half and had a man sent off late in the clash.

The four forwards — Giuliano [Simeone], Julian, [Antoine] Griezmann and Lookman — interpreted the spaces that the opponent leaves so well,” Simeone added.

“This game will stay in our memories, whatever happens in the tie. We’ll remember a performance like this. Our fans need games like this, big games, semifinals.”

Atletico Madrid will return to action against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, while their second leg clash against Barcelona will hold on March 3.
