Virgil Van Dijk says Dominik Szoboszlai has the qualities to become his successor as Liverpool captain in the future.
The Hungarian captain has been the Premier League champions’ best player so far this season, shuffling between multiple roles and providing consistent performances.
The former RB Leipzig midfielder has played in the midfield and also had shifts playing as a right back, earning accolades and praises from his teammates and manager.
Speaking during an interview, the Reds captain Van Dijk has backed the 25-year-old to go on and lead the club from the front in the future.
“That’s all on the manager I think. I don’t know. Yeah”, Van Dijk stated.
“Obviously he has been very good. Also a player who I think can still make the next step in terms of being a leader for this team.
It starts by leading by example and that’s something he has done so far this season.”
Szoboszlai has already scored 10 times for Liverpool this season, more than he has achieved in a single season since his move to Anfield in 2023.
The midfielder is also just two goals away from matching his personal season’s best of 12, achieved during his time at Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg.
The 25-year-old contract expires in 2028 and he has already attracted interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, who are keeping tabs on his progress.
Meanwhile, he has made 35 appearances across all competitions so far this season, highlighting his growing influence to Arne Slot’s side.
“But also everything around it; there is still progress to be made and that’s a good thing in my opinion so hopefully he will be very important for the years to come at Liverpool”, Van Dijk concluded.
Liverpool return to league action this weekend when they face relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest, hoping for a win to keep their top four hopes alive.
