Rogers slams Aston Villa’s display after shock defeat at Wolves

Morgan Rogers has expressed disappointment at Aston Villa’s performance after they fell to a shock 2-0 defeat at bottom-side Wolves in Friday night’s Premier League clash.

Villa, who were in contention for the league title as at last month, have seen results dip in recent weeks which has left them in a battle to even secure a top-four spot.

Unai Emery’s side have now just one of their last five Premier League games and are only three points above Manchester United, who could usurp them with a win over Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Speaking after the match, Rogers admitted that the team’s levels have dropped and they must now work on making improvements in their remaining matches.

“Disappointing. We didn’t do anywhere near enough to create chances and score goals. We controlled the game in parts, it was not all doom and gloom. But we did not create enough chances”, Rogers admitted.

“They are at home and are a good team, despite their position. They grew into the game and had their moments. In the first half we managed them as well as we could, but they had a spell on top. We did not do enough.”

After a goalless first 45 minutes, Wolves took the lead just after the hour mark through a fine strike from Joao Gomes.

Rodrigo Gomes then scored a second deep into stoppage-time to seal the crucial win.

“It does weigh on us but it shouldn’t. We deserve to be here and we should not forget that. Our run lately has not been as good as usual but that is the battle of the Premier League. We are going to get back to our good run of wins”, Rogers added.

“We set our standards high and we have the ability to win every game. Obviously that is not realistic but we are playing good football as a whole and there is nothing to worry about.”

Aston Villa will turn their attention to ending their poor run of form in their next game against Chelsea on Wednesday.
