Juan Mata’s remarkable Melbourne Victory chapter is over, but the Spanish star has stopped short of calling time on his playing career.
Melbourne Victory have confirmed that the 38-year-old will not return for the 2026-27 A-League Men campaign, bringing his spell on the pitch with the club to an end.
However, Mata is not retiring just yet.
The former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder will now assess his next move from his base in Europe, leaving the door open for another chapter in his decorated playing career.
His future with Melbourne Victory will also continue away from the pitch.
Mata recently acquired an ownership stake in the club and has taken on the role of chairman of Victory’s newly established football committee. His influence, therefore, will remain firmly connected to the Australian club even after his playing days in Melbourne are finished.
The Spaniard arrived at Victory ahead of the 2025-26 season following a difficult campaign with Western Sydney Wanderers. What followed was a stunning late-career revival.
Mata rediscovered his best form, helping Victory reach the finals while producing five goals and 13 assists. He also played more minutes in a domestic campaign than he had managed since the 2017-18 season with Manchester United.
His performances earned him the Johnny Warren Medal as the A-League Men’s best player, while his fellow professionals also selected him in the PFA Team of the Season.
Mata clearly enjoyed the experience, describing his time at Victory as a special chapter in his career.
“I loved every minute and so greatly enjoyed everything that we achieved last season, falling back in love with football at such a special place, in an amazing city that it was a privilege to call home,” Mata said in a statement.
“Thanks to my teammates, the staff and the Board for welcoming me so warmly, supporting me so generously, and allowing me to give my best for this wonderful Club and the amazing members and fans whose support I still feel every day.
“Now I am excited about our next chapters, believing together in the future of Australian football and inspiring the next generation of Melbourne Victory players and supporters.”
Mata also credited former Victory coach Arthur Diles for helping him rediscover his love for the game. Diles left the club after his contract expired, with Giovanni Savarese taking charge ahead of the new campaign.
Victory director of football John Didulica believes Mata’s impact will be remembered long after his final appearance.
“Juan’s 2025-26 season will live long in the memory of Victory fans and should be cherished by all supporters of the world’s game here in Australia,” Victory director of football John Didulica said. “The way he performed on the pitch and the way he conducted himself around the club were both exemplary.
“Everyone at the club is excited that he is part of our ownership group and, in the future, looks forward to his football intelligence leading our football committee.”
Victory now have just one foreign-player spot available in their squad following Mata’s departure, with reports linking the club with a move for Uruguayan forward Guillermo May.
Despite losing their star midfielder, Victory have already made an encouraging start under Savarese. The club remain unbeaten and booked their place in the Australia Cup final after defeating Sydney FC on Wednesday.
For Mata, the next chapter remains unknown. But one thing is clear: his Melbourne Victory story may have ended on the pitch, yet his connection with the club is only beginning in a different role.
