Barcelona subdue Atletico but miss out on Copa del Rey final

FC Barcelona produced a stirring response at Camp Nou, defeating Atletico Madrid 3-0 in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final, yet the damage from the first leg ultimately proved too steep to overcome.

Trailing 4-0 from the clash at Wanda Metropolitano, Barca entered the return fixture knowing only a near-perfect performance would keep their cup dreams alive.

Right from kick-off, they seized control of possession, pressed high up the pitch and forced Atletico onto the back foot.

However, Diego Simeone’s men arrived with a commanding cushion and a clear defensive blueprint.

The breakthrough finally arrived midway through the first half. Marc Bernal capitalised inside the box, rifling home to ignite belief around Camp Nou and give the hosts a foothold in the tie. Suddenly, momentum swung sharply in Barcelona’s favour.

As the first half ticked into stoppage time, the pressure intensified.

Raphinha stepped up from the penalty spot and coolly converted, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and reducing the aggregate deficit further.

Heading into the interval, the Catalans had rediscovered their rhythm and belief.

After the restart, Barcelona continued to surge forward, committing bodies in attack and pinning Atletico deep in their own half.

Their persistence paid off with a third goal on the night, capping an impressive 90-minute display that showcased both resilience and attacking intent.

Nevertheless, while Barcelona won the battle in the second leg, Atletico’s ruthless 4-0 advantage from the first encounter proved decisive.

Their clinical finishing and tactical discipline across the two legs secured progression to the Copa del Rey final.

For Barca, despite falling short on aggregate, the performance offers encouragement as they turn their focus back to domestic and European ambitions.

The fight, intensity and attacking spark on display at Camp Nou may yet serve as a springboard for the challenges ahead.
