Hansi Flick proud of Barcelona’s heart despite Copa del Rey heartbreak

FC Barcelona boss Hansi Flick admitted his disappointment after his side fell short in their Copa del Rey semi-final clash with Atletico Madrid, yet he insisted there is plenty to be proud of following a stirring second-leg display.

Barcelona’s 3-0 victory at Spotify Camp Nou was not enough to overturn the 4-0 first-leg defeat, as Atletico edged through 4-3 on aggregate to book their place in next month’s final in Seville.

Nevertheless, the Catalans pushed the tie to its limits and were just one goal away from forcing extra time.

Goals from Marc Bernal and a Raphinha penalty injected belief into the home crowd, while Barcelona’s relentless attacking intent kept Diego Simeone’s men under sustained pressure.

In the aftermath, Flick reflected on both the frustration and the positives from the night.

“Obviously I am sad because we did not achieve our objective of reaching the final in Seville but we can be very proud. We had chances to score four or five goals and we have to focus on that for the games and challenges coming up,” said the Barca coach.

“We have given everything and that’s what I want to see. We gave more than 100% and that’s fantastic. Today everybody played with heart and it was a great performance from us but it was just not to be and we have to accept that.

“We have done it with lads from La Masia such as Cubarsí, Gerard Martín and Marc Bernal and that makes me happy. They have incredible talent.”

The gaffer added: “Everyone is clear about how we have to play and we have seen that on the field. We have to carry on like this but first we have to recover and take it step by step because there is still a long way to go in the league and the Champions League.”

Although the Copa del Rey dream has slipped away, Barcelona’s response in the second leg showcased resilience and identity: qualities Flick will hope carry forward into the decisive stretch of the season.
