Le Bris salutes Sunderland spirit after vital win at Leeds

Sunderland AFC boss Regis Le Bris praised his side’s unity and resilience after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Leeds United pushed the Black Cats onto 40 Premier League points.

In a tense and tactical contest, the decisive moment arrived during a dramatic five-minute spell early in the second half.

Leeds thought they had edged ahead when Joe Rodon powered in a header, only for VAR to intervene and rule the goal out for offside. Almost immediately, the pendulum swung the other way.

Following a VAR review at the opposite end, Ethan Ampadu was adjudged to have handled inside the area, and Sunderland were awarded a penalty.

Diarra kept his composure from the spot, squeezing his effort past Karl Darlow despite the goalkeeper getting a touch.

From there, the host threw bodies forward in search of an equaliser. However, Sunderland stood firm, digging deep and showing defensive discipline to secure only their third away league win of the campaign and a potentially crucial three points in their survival bid.

Speaking after the final whistle, Le Bris could not hide his pride in his players’ application and adaptability.

“Football is unpredictable but I am really proud of the players tonight,” said Le Bris.

“We are proud because we were really well-connected and showed great character.

“It was a tough game and intense – it was a question of key moments.

“We were well aligned to seize our opportunities and it was an important win.”

The Frenchman also highlighted the tactical challenge posed by Leeds’ set-up and the intelligence his side showed in adjusting on the fly.

“Leeds played with an unusual set-up so we had to adapt our structure to press them.

“The Lads did really well and I am impressed because we didn’t work on this.

“We explained the ideas but then you have to execute.”

After a shaky opening, Sunderland grew into the contest and controlled key phases of the match.

“We struggled in the first 10 minutes but after that we were brilliant.

“I am proud of the flexibility of the squad and the way they worked together to manage this problem.”

Le Bris also pointed to the collective spirit within his squad, underlining the importance of every member of the group.

“Melker (Ellborg) and Luke (O’Nien) are great examples of what we want to do.

“We are a family and we have a small group but they all know they will be involved. We don’t know when but they work hard behind the scenes and stay connected.”

With nine games remaining, Sunderland now sit on the symbolic 40-point mark, traditionally viewed as the benchmark for safety, but Le Bris insists there is no room for complacency.

“We don’t know if 40 points will be enough (to stay up), but it is a good target and with nine more games to play we want to stay ambitious.”

Momentum, belief and togetherness are clearly driving Sunderland forward, and if they continue to display the same grit and cohesion, their top-flight status looks increasingly secure.
