Massimiliano Allegri has praised AC Milan’s defensive display and composure after their hard-fought 1-0 win over Inter Milan on Sunday night.
The Rossoneri went into the clash 10 points behind their city rivals, but cut the gap between them to just seven ahead of the final 10 rounds of matches.
Allegri’s men also won the reverse fixture back in November by the same scoreline and extended their unbeaten run in the fixture to seven matches across all competitions.
During his post-match press conference, the former Juventus boss applauded his side as tbey dug deep for a well deserved result at the San Siro.
“Milan did well, the lads were very good, we could have been more focused in the final 30 minutes”, Allegri said after the match.
“We reached 60 points, we held Juventus at 10 points away, we have Como at -9, Roma at -9. It was important to get a result. We worked for six or seven months to get to March in the best possible condition.
“That’s the most important thing, because after now in March there are the games that matter and the season will be decided.”
In a keenly contested clash, AC Milan claimed bragging rights after scoring the only goal of the game through Pervis Estupinan in the first half of the clash.
The Rossoneri are also on course for a return to the UEFA Champions League after missing out last season when they finished in eight-place.
“We ran a lot in the first half, and it was a huge waste of energy. In the second half, partly due to Inter’s skill and partly because we’d exhausted a lot of energy, we dropped back a bit and allowed a few crosses”, Allegri added.
“But we had some great chances, aside from Dimarco’s, where we managed to get through on a counter-attack, and we defended in an organised manner.
“We had favourable situations: in the first half, after going 1-0 up, we almost made it 2-0, and in the second half, the same thing. That said, Inter remains the clear favourites for the title”, the 58-year-old concluded.
AC Milan will now turn their attention to their next league match against Lazio next Sunday, hoping for another win to keep the chase on Inter at the top of the standings.
