Igor Tudor has said that it was important for goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky to come off in the first half of Tottenham Hotspur’s 5-2 defeat at Atletico Madrid in Tuesday’s Champions League clash.
The Premier League side suffered a crushing defeat in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie, giving them a mountain to climb ahead of the second leg.
One major talking point when the team news was released was the inclusion of Kinsky in the lineup ahead of first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
That decision proved costly, with Kinsky making two high-profile errors that led to two goals inside the opening 15 minutes of the clash, before he was substituted in the 17th minute.
Speaking after the clash, Tudor defended the decision to replace the goalkeeper who was having a bad day at the office.
“(The situation was) very rare. I’ve been coaching for 15 years, I’ve never done this. It was necessary to preserve the guy, preserve the team,” Tudor told reporters.
“It was, before the game, the right choice to do in the moment like we are. With pressure on Vicario, in another competition… ‘Tony’ is a very good goalkeeper. It was, for me, the right decision.
“After this, of course, it’s easy to say that it was not the right decision.”
Kinsky slipped and gave the ball away to Ademola Lookman, before Marcos Llorente gave the home side the lead in the sixth minute.
Antoine Griezmann scored a second, before another Kinsky error allowed Julian Alvarez to score a third.
Le Normand added a fourth, before Richarlison pulled one back for the visitors as Atletico took a 4-1 lead into the break.
Alvarez then scored again after a stunning counter attack and Dominic Solanke grabbed a second for Tottenham, who lost 5-2 on the night.
“Unfortunately, it happened in this big game, these mistakes. So we paid this start of the game, it was too much for us”, Tudor continued.
“(Kinsky) was sorry… the team is with him, me too. I was speaking with him. He understands the moment, he understands why he goes out.
“As I said before, he’s a very good goalkeeper. We are with him, we are all together. It’s never about one player”, the former Juventus boss concluded.
Tottenham have now lost all four matches under Tudor and now head to Anfield to face Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday, before the return leg against Atletico next week.
