Igor Tudor has praised Tottenham Hotspur’s performance after they recorded an impressive 3-2 win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Spurs recorded their first win since the arrival of Tudor last month with a hard-earned win over the Spanish side, although they bowed out of the competition on aggregate.
Atletico’s 5-2 win in the first leg meant Spurs had to score four times without reply to complete a comeback in the clash. Instead, they crashed out on a 7-5 aggregate result.
Speaking after the result, Tudor expressed satisfaction with the performance as his side showed fighting spirit to earn a crucial win.
“The sensations are mixed. You don’t like to not get through but it was a very good performance. It was a beautiful sensation on the pitch with the fans who were really there together with the team from the first moment,” Tudor said.
“Congratulations to the players. It is positive, commitment, lot of running, lots of good things.
“The energy was really nice from the first moment. The players believed and you could see the performance at this moment is very important. In the last two games we have improved.”
Tottenham opened scoring through Randal Kolo Muani in the clash to spark hopes of an unlikely comeback.
However, Julian Alvarez’s equalizer two minutes after the restart dashed any hopes of a comeback.
Xavi Simons put them back in front in the 52nd minute, but David Hancko headed Atletico level for a second time in the clash.
Tottenham were not giving up without a fight and snatched victory at the death as Simons converted from the penalty spot, after he had been fouled inside the area by Jose Maria Gimenez.
Spurs now face Nottingham Forest in the Premier League this weekend as they will be aiming for their first league win of 2026 to move away from the relegation zone.
“It is an important game on Sunday but it will not decide anything yet, it will be decided over the last three games,” Tudor added.
Tottenham are just a single point above the drop zone on the Premier League standings and must defeat Forest in Sunday’s clash to hold the advantage in their fight against relegation.
