Chelsea give Chalobah’s fitness update ahead of Everton clash

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has confirmed that Trevoh Chalobah’s injury is less serious than first feared, though the defender is still expected to be sidelined for a few weeks.

Chalobah, 26, suffered a horror injury towards the end of the midweek 3-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second-leg clash at Stamford Bridge.

The England international twisted his ankle after a challenge with Achraf Hakimi and was stretchered off, as the Blues ended the game with 10 men.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference on Thursday, Rosenior confirmed that Chalobah will sit out several weeks of action, starting with Chelsea’s trip to Everton on Saturday.

“It wasn’t until after the game that I saw the image [of the tackle] and then you’re really worried for the next day”, the Chelsea boss said.

“Obviously, it’s never good that Trevoh is out for any period of time, but fortunately, it’s not as serious as we first feared.

“It’s still a serious injury but we’re looking at a period of six weeks, which is disappointing but from where we were a couple of days ago, straight after the game, we are in a better place than we thought”, Rosenior added.

Chelsea are on a poor run of form, having lost their last three games across all competitions and will be hoping to end their losing streak with a good result against Everton.

The Blues suffered an 8-2 aggregate defeat to PSG in the Champions League, while they were also defeated 1-0 at home by Newcastle United last weekend.

The West London side are unbeaten in four games against Everton and will now be hoping to continue that run to avoid losing further ground in the race for Champions League football next season.
