David Beckham has praised Michael Carrick’s influence at Manchester United, stating that he deserves to be appointed on a permanent basis.
Carrick, 44, was appointed on a short-term role in January and has turned around the club’s fortunes, putting them firmly in the mix for Champions League qualification.
The Red Devils dismissed Ruben Amorim, who had guided them to a 15th place finish last season, earlier in 2026, and named Carrick as head coach until the end of the season, giving the club time to appoint a new permanent manager in the summer.
However, Beckham believes his former teammate should be considered alongside other candidates for the role of permanent manager.
“Yeah, I must admit, the last few months have been a lot more comfortable than the last 10 years, to be honest,” Beckham said.
“It’s been tough over that time. But I think Michael’s got experience. I think he’s got a calmness about him that he’s brought into the club.”
Manchester United are currently third on the Premier League standings with 55 points and are primed to qualify for next season’s Champions League after a two-year absence.
The Red Devils have picked up 23 points from a possible 30 since the arrival of Carrick, representing a remarkable improvement in their performances.
Meanwhile, no decision has been made over the appointment of a new permanent manager, although several names have been discussed.
Luis Enrique, Julian Nagelsmann and Roberto de Zerbi are among the favourites for the job, although Carrick could also have put himself into consideration with his impressive performances so far.
“He knows the club and he knows the players. He knows the way Man United play and the way Man United should play”, Beckham concluded.
Manchester United return to action in the Premier League on April 13, when they face Leeds United hoping for a win to boost their top-four hopes.
