Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa has now highlighted Federico Valverde’s exceptional versatility as the Real Madrid captain continues to earn plaudits for his all-action displays.
Throughout the season, Valverde has been a driving force in Madrid’s midfield, stepping up whenever called upon.
Even as Los Blancos have occasionally struggled for control in the middle of the park, the Uruguayan has remained a constant: blending defensive discipline with bursts of attacking brilliance.
However, what truly sets him apart is his tactical flexibility. From anchoring the midfield to pushing forward, and even filling in across the flanks, Valverde has become a go-to solution for multiple roles.
“Fede Valverde is a different player than the others in his position,” said Bielsa.
“He plays through the middle of the pitch, while moving just as comfortably from the middle to the right as from the middle to the left,” he began, highlighting Valverde’s versatility.
As Bielsa broke it down further, he pointed to Valverde’s ability to seamlessly transition across different midfield roles, adapting to the demands of each game.
“In midfield, he can play in a deep-lying role, ahead of the DM, he can also play close to an attacking midfielder, and he operates effectively across all three zones of the pitch.
“Then, recently, he also played as a fullback,” he added.
Building on that, the Uruguay boss emphasized how Valverde’s skill set extends beyond traditional midfield duties, noting his recent impact in wider attacking areas.
“What most recently caught everyone’s attention was his performance as a winger.
“He’s created decisive plays, normally on the right, but lately we’ve also seen him make runs down the left and provide assists from there.”
In the final third of his assessment, Bielsa drew comparisons with other elite midfielders, underlining why Valverde stands in a category of his own.
“This is what makes him different to someone like Pedri or Vitinha. Neither Pedri nor Vitinha have this versatility.
“Fede is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world,” he concluded.
As the season heads into its decisive phase, Valverde’s adaptability remains a crucial weapon for Real Madrid: giving the team both balance and unpredictability when it matters most.
