Club Brugge goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has announced that he will retire from football at the end of the current campaign.
The former Liverpool shot-stopper previously retired from international football after 35 appearances for Belgium in 2023 and will now play the final match of his professional career against Gent in May on the final day of the season.
The 38–year-old rose through the ranks at Belgian club Sint-Truiden, before going on to play for the senior team between 2006 and 2010.
Mignolet then moved away from Belgium to play professionally for the first time in his career when he joined Sunderland in 2010.
“The end result is not completely in my control, but my commitment, willpower and determination will be there every day until my very last moment at Club Brugge,” Mignolet admitted.
The former Belgian international then sealed a high-profile move to Liverpool in 2013 and was part of the squad that won the UEFA Champions League in the 2018-19 season, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the final, althoygh Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson started ahead of him.
Mignolet left the Reds in 2019 returning to Belgium to join Club Brugge and has been a very important part of their squad since his arrival.
The 38-year-old has helped the club to four league titles, one Belgian Cup and two Belgian Super Cup titles, while also winning the goalkeeper of the year award five times so far.
He could end this campaign with another league title, with the Blue-Black heading into the Championship playoff round among the favourites.
“There are still 10 important games ahead of us with one clear goal, to become champions”, Mignolet concluded.
Club Brugge will return to action on Monday night, when they face Anderlecht in a Belgian league encounter at the Jan Breydel Stadium.
