Neymar’s comment sparks referee sexism controversy after Santos victory

Neymar Jr. has come under intense scrutiny after a controversial post-match comment directed at a female referee sparked a sexism debate in Brazil.

Despite Santos securing a comfortable 2-0 victory, tensions flared late in the game when Neymar was shown a yellow card.

The forward, clearly frustrated, voiced his displeasure during a post-match interview: setting off a wave of reactions both on and off the pitch.

As emotions ran high, Neymar questioned the decision, insisting he had been on the receiving end of multiple rough challenges before being booked.

“This card is unfair. I was on the receiving end of a dangerous, unnecessary tackle at the end of the match,” Neymar fumed at the end of the match in an interview with Canal Premiere.

“It wasn’t the first, but the third or fourth. I went to protest and received a yellow card.”

However, the situation escalated following a particular remark that quickly drew criticism.

“Acordou de chico e veio assim pro jogo,” which translates to “woke up like ‘Chico’ and came to the game in that state.”

The comment has since ignited backlash among fans and observers, with many interpreting it as inappropriate and sexist toward the match official.

As the debate gathers pace, the incident has once again placed the spotlight on player conduct and respect for referees in modern football.

While Santos move forward with momentum on the pitch, this off-field controversy continues to dominate headlines; raising broader questions about professionalism, language, and accountability in the sport.
