Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk has apologized to the club’s supporters following their embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarterfinal on Saturday.
The Reds’ disappointing campaign continued with elimination from the FA Cup, leaving the Champions League as their only realistic path to win a major trophy this season.
It also marked their third consecutive defeat to Manchester City this season and their 15th across all competitions in what has become a very difficult season.
Reacting to the result, Van Dijk apologized to fans and has urged his teammates to improve on their performances in their remaining games this season.
“I can only apologise to the fans for what we have shown, especially the second half”, Van Dijk stated.
“Obviously you come out with the right intentions from the dressing room [after half-time], to hopefully score for 2-1 as soon as possible to change the game.
“The opposite happens and to come back from 3-0 is obviously very difficult here – but also you shouldn’t give up and that’s maybe, at a certain point, what happened”, the Dutch defender added.
“We let our fans down, we let ourselves down, and the manager. The way we played in the second half, especially, must hurt for everyone. It definitely hurts me.”
Erling Haaland bagged a stunning hat-trick in the clash, while Antoine Semenyo added his name on the scoresheet as Manchester City recorded a 4-0 win to advance to an eighth consecutive semifinal.
“The matter of fact is now, PSG are waiting for us. I watched them Friday a little bit. It will be so tough again. So we have to be ready mentally as soon as possible”, Van Dijk continued.
Liverpool will now turn their attention to the midweek Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain, hoping for a win to bounce back to form.
