Paul Merson: Brighton clash Tottenham Hotspur’s survival decider

Paul Merson has ramped up the pressure on Tottenham, branding their upcoming Premier League clash against Brighton as the defining moment in their fight for survival.

As the relegation battle intensifies, Spurs find themselves in a precarious position with little margin for error.

Following West Ham’s victory over Wolves, Tottenham slipped into the bottom three, increasing the stakes ahead of a crucial weekend fixture.

Moreover, Roberto De Zerbi’s tenure got off to a difficult start with a narrow 1-0 defeat at Sunderland, leaving Spurs desperate to respond.

Now, attention shifts to their showdown against Brighton, a side known for their attacking flair and fearless approach.

Consequently, Merson believes the encounter could shape Tottenham’s fate for the remainder of the season.

“I worry for Spurs. Brighton is a funny game next week because they give up chances but when they attack they can really play,” said Merson.

“Brighton will be playing with no fear against a team with shackles on.

“Two of their six games are Chelsea and Aston Villa away, so they’ve got four games to survive. Forest were quite poor against Villa, but they didn’t lose, they scored a decent goal.

“By next week, Tottenham could be right in the mire, all three other teams have got massively winnable games. Tottenham don’t even look like scoring, no urgency.

“I feel the Brighton game is the cup final of cup finals. They beat Brighton and they will beat Wolves and be safe. But if they don’t, it’s massive.

“If they don’t win next week and other teams pick up points, you are bang in trouble.”

As the fixtures approach, Spurs must find both urgency and cutting edge in attack.

With rivals picking up points and pressure mounting, this clash against Brighton could ultimately determine whether Tottenham sink or survive in a tense Premier League run-in.
