Eddie Howe believes that Newcastle United showed signs of improvement in their pattern of play despite suffering a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday.
The Magpies had lost four games in a row across all competitions and fell to yet another defeat that now completely ends their hopes of European football for next season.
Despite showing much improvements and having several opportunities to score against a nervy Arsenal, they could not breach their opponents defence and ended up on the losing side.
Speaking afterwards, Howe was pleased with the performance and believes that results would take an upturn very soon.
“We’re in that moment where we’re losing games even when we look stronger. We’ve got to be resilient and find a way”, Howe said.
“Today is a big step forward. We need to make sure that’s not just attributed to the fact it’s Arsenal away from home and the players are hyper-alert to make sure we perform.”
Arsenal edged closer towards the title with another hard-fought win over Newcastle United to return to the top of the standings.
The Gunners had previously seen a nine-point gap reduced and had fallen to second place, but victory over Newcastle put them back at the top with only a few games left to play.
Eberechi Eze scored inside 10 minutes to give Arsenal the lead, with the goal ultimately proving decisive in determining the outcome of the encounter.
Despite a flurry of late chances from both sides, Arsenal held on to seal a 1-0 win, condemning Newcastle to another defeat.
“We have to make sure we have that for every game”, Howe added.
“But we have to take the positives and the performance and know that will ultimately change results.”
Newcastle United will return to action against Brighton on Saturday, hoping for a win to end their poor run of form.
