Calum McFarlane has backed Enzo Fernandez following his recent trip to Madrid, insisting the decision reflects strong team spirit within Chelsea.
After the Blues booked their place in the FA Cup final with victory over Leeds, the squad were granted time off: prompting several players to travel together, including Fernandez, Marc Cucurella and Joao Pedro, who attended the Madrid Open.
Despite recent controversy surrounding Fernandez, who had faced internal suspension after comments linking him with Real Madrid, McFarlane was quick to play down any concerns, instead highlighting the positive side of the situation.
“We gave the lads three days off,” said McFarlane.
“I think it says a lot about the group that they go away together. I love the fact that they spend time together.
“They’ve gone to Madrid to watch tennis. I don’t see an issue with it. He was there last year with his team-mates.
“The last time they had a break they spent time together as well. I think it’s a positive sign for the unity within the group.”
As Chelsea shift focus back to competitive action, McFarlane’s stance suggests a dressing room pulling in the same direction.
With momentum building, off-pitch unity could yet translate into on-field success in the decisive weeks ahead.
