Manchester United interim coach Michael Carrick has provided the latest injury update on forward Benjamin Sesko after Sunday’s dramatic Premier League win over Liverpool.
The Red Devils sealed a return to the UEFA Champions League after a two-year absence with a 3-2 win over the Reds, completing the league double over their rivals for the first time in a decade.
However, they were dealt a blow in the clash when Sesko, who had scored the second goal for Manchester United, was withdrawn at halftime due to an injury problem.
The Slovenian striker was on the end of a tackle from Ibrahima Konate and fell into the advertising boards at the stadium.
Speaking after the clash, Carrick revealed that Sesko had been carrying a slight issue until the fall and was withdrawn as a precaution to avoid aggravating the situation.
“He’s been carrying a bit of a shin problem and when he got pushed into the board, it was right on the spot he’s been carrying a little bit”, Carrick said.
“So that was it. The decision to withdraw him at the interval was precautionary, but it remains to be seen how much time the 22-year-old will spend on the sidelines.”
Manchester United have booked a top five finish in the Premier League this season, ending a two-year hiatus from the Champions League.
Matheus Cunha and Sesko put them two goals up in a stunning first half performance, but Liverpool hit back in the second half through two gifts from the hosts.
Dominik Szoboszlai scored one and set up Cody Gakpo to finish a second and complete the comeback.
However, Kobbie Mainoo, fresh from signing a contract extension at the club last week, fired in the winner later in the half as Manchester United claimed bragging rights.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils will now be sweating on the fitness of Sesko for next weekend’s clash against Sunderland.
