Calum McFarlane is expected to remain part of Chelsea FC’s first-team coaching setup under newly-appointed manager Xabi Alonso.
According to reports from Sky Sports News, McFarlane is likely to continue working with the senior squad despite Alonso officially taking charge this summer.
Alonso was confirmed as Chelsea’s new manager over the weekend, but McFarlane will remain in temporary control for the club’s final Premier League fixtures of the season.
The interim boss has already stepped up twice this campaign, first after the departure of Enzo Maresca in January and again following Liam Rosenior’s exit in April.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s upcoming clash against Tottenham Hotspur, McFarlane admitted his full attention remains on finishing the season strongly rather than focusing on his own future.
“I haven’t thought about that. There is so much to prepare for. There is so much to play for and answer. But my focus is always on the next game and the next training session,” he said.
McFarlane also confirmed that he has already exchanged messages with Alonso following the Spaniard’s appointment at Stamford Bridge.
“He sent me a text message yesterday. I’ll keep that private, but mainly just around the final. I’ve had a brief conversation with him via text.”
The Chelsea interim coach also praised Alonso’s arrival, describing the former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen boss as a major addition for the club.
“Really exciting news. Very talented, massive pedigree. Really excited for the club. We’re all looking forward to working with him.”
McFarlane believes Chelsea’s stature and talented squad will continue to attract elite names despite a difficult campaign.
“It doesn’t surprise me. It’s a massive club. We’ve got really exciting players coming to play here.
“Even though it’s a disappointing season, they are showing at times this year the kind of quality that we have. It’s a massive club and it will always attract top players and top managers.”
